Can R&D solve the energy crisis?
Professor Ian Fells CBE FREng FRSE
Emeritus Professor of Energy Conversion, Newcastle University

Tuesday 22 November 2005, 6.00pm
The Royal Society, 7 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1Y 5AG

Is there an energy crisis? Are we approaching the peaks of oil and gas production, and will it be downhill after 2010/2020? Electricity is the lifeblood of civilisation. Is research and development (R&D) into new electrical supply and efficient end use sufficiently well funded and co-ordinated to give confidence that there will be a steadily increasing clean supply of electricity in future?

Professor Ian Fells CBE FREng FRSE is emeritus professor of energy conversion at Newcastle University. He has published over 250 papers on topics as varied as chemical physics of combustion, fuel cells, energy economics, environmental protection and energy policy. He has made over 500 television and radio programmes and was awarded the Faraday Medal of the Royal Society in 1993 for improving the public understanding of science. He has advised a number of European governments on energy policy.
