SIG afternoon seminar: The R&D Management Skills Workshop - How to lead, motivate and influence effectively

The purpose of this meeting is to gain from an understanding of current research and how individuals and organisations can improve the way their teams work and with be chaired by Professor Terence Knibb, retired chief scientist of BAE Systems.

The meeting will begin with a presentation by Pam Jones of Ashridge Business School on research findings about leading, motivating and managing complex teams. This will be followed by an interactive and provoking presentation from Bill Metcalf of Cambridge Strategic Management entitled 'Project Management in an R&D context'. Bill will describe the factors to be considered in leading an R&D project team, managing and influencing all those critical in ensuring optimal goals are attained. Describing case examples from his experience managing R&D projects in Europe and the United States.

There will be a break for coffee and refreshments which will be followed by a provoking presentation from Steve Martin, Managing Director of Influence At Work (UK). Together with social psychologist Professor Robert Cialdini and Dr. Noah Goldstein he is the author of the recently published book ‘Yes! 50 Secrets from the Science of Persuasion’. Steve will be speaking on how to influence organisational change, teams and individual behaviour.

The meeting will conclude with a discussion between the meeting participants and the speakers, chaired by Professor Knibb.

Professor Terence Knibb 

At the end of 2005, Professor Knibb retired from his post of 'Chief Scientist - BAE Systems', which he had held for over five years. Educated at Imperial College, Prof. Knibb's career has covered posts of Assistant Director & Director of major corporate laboratories, including the former Hirst Research Centre of the General Electric Co. and British Aerospace's Sowerby Research Centre.

In his various corporate roles, his responsibilities have included the development of strategies for global technology acquisition and the identification and formation of international research partnerships. His activities on many national and international fora have often led to him taking a lead role in the interaction of UK/European aerospace and defence industry bodies with the both the UK government and and EU Commission.

Pam Jones

Pam Jones, Programme Director for the Performance Through People and Leading Complex Teams programmes, Ashridge Business School

Pam specialises in performance management, team work, influencing and leadership development, researching and writing on these subjects, most recently factors influencing performance of complex teams. She works internationally with a range of organisations to design and deliver development programmes and also works as a coach to help managers with specific issues. She works with a range of clients on an international basis, designing and delivering development initiatives.

Pam studied at Warwick University and gained an MBA from City University, London. She has British Psychological Society Level A and B qualifications in Psychometric testing, and is a licensed NeuroLinguistic Programming Master Practitioner.

Steve J. Martin

Steve Martin is the Director of Influence At Work (UK). Influence At Work provides training and development services in the fields of human persuasion, influence and compliance. Steve is the co-author of a book published in November, 2007 ‘50 Secrets From the Science of Persuasion’ with the behavioural scientist, Professor Noah Goldstein and the eminent psychologist, Professor Robert Cialdini (President of Influence at Work Inc.). 

After studying human and social psychology Steve worked for several blue-chip companies in a number of roles includes sales, marketing, management and training and development. In his current role he has worked with a number of corporate and government organizations that include GlaxoSmithKline, Innogy and Aventis. Steve has also written over 20 business-related articles.

Bill Metcalf

Bill Metcalf has been involved with R&D for all his life – initially as a radar engineer flying balloons at Cardington, then as a Radio Astronomer in Cambridge, at Hewlett Packard in California, for the Philips Group directing telecoms R&D, and latterly in his own company responsible for GIS, mapping and statistical demography.

He has a long-term interest in the organisation and management of R&D and the challenges of creating wealth from intellectual activities .He is a Fellow of both the Institute of Physics and the Institution of Engineering and Technology and regularly lectures in Project Management at the universities of Cambridge, Cranfield, London and Leeds. His last visit to the Royal Society was to celebrate the Cassini landing on Titan as he was responsible for planning the development and deployment of the surface science component of the Huygens mission.
