Our structure
Summary
The Society is governed on a day-to-day basis by its Executive Committee, a voluntary board of directors,
which includes its Chair, Honorary Treasurer and Honorary Secretary.
The members of the Society's Executive Committee are elected at its
Annual General Meeting to serve a term of up to three years. The Society's
President is elected by the Executive Committee. His Royal Highness
the Duke of Edinburgh attended an Evening Meeting held at The
Royal Society in May 1970 and kindly consented to become the
Society's Patron.
Our President - Sir Richard Sykes DSc FRS
Sir Richard Sykes
became President of the R&D Society in July 2002. Sir Richard stepped down as Rector of Imperial College London in June 2008, and until
May 2002 was Chairman of GlaxoSmithKline.
He has had a distinguished in pharmaceutical R&D, which included Director
of Microbiology of the Squibb Institute for Medical Research, New Jersey, and
Group Research and Development Director, Glaxo plc.
Sir Richard received his knighthood for services to the pharmaceutical industry
in the 1994 New Year Honours list. He was awarded the Society's Duncan
Davies Memorial Medal in 1997. He sits on a number of government and scientific
committees and is a Trustee of the Natural History Museum in London and the Board
of Directors, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

Administrative Secretary
Administration of the R&D Society is undertaken by the Administrative
Secretary. Previously provided by the Institute of Physics and the Institute
of Biology, the Administrative Secretary functions are now located at the
Royal Society.
